The Riot: To All the Privileged Babies Complaining About Racist Black People
To wrap up the theme of today’s posts, obviously inspired by the discussion late last week and over the weekend from critics of the blog who think we’re not “fair” to white people, here is a great blog post from Yasmeen (yoctavias), who also included this note to me:
This is just me ranting, but I thought that I would show you it.
Only because I hate it when privileged people complain about reverse racism and reverse sexism.
Its not AFFECTING you as much as it is affecting other races and sexes. Historically, economically—- I won’t say emotionally.
Minorities can be racially prejudiced, ignorant and hateful.
But only whites, who are the majority, can be racist.
Power and privilege.

Note to those who make the mistake of using “people of color” and “black people” interchangeably: Keep in mind, Yasmeen is writing from the perspective of a black woman. Any person of color could relate to this list, or come up with their own list of similar hardships.
When the guy you like refuses to date you because you are black.
When guys don’t find you attractive because you are black.
When the only job you can get is fast food, because you can’t get a job in retail.
When you walk down the street from school and someone shouts N***ER out their car door, and everyone around you hears but doesn’t say anything.
When you go to college and you are the only black person in all of your classes.
When you go to a party and people assume you can dance like a black girl or rap like a black guy.
When you move into a predominantly white neighborhood, and people paint white crosses on your doors and throw bricks through your windows.
When you go to the movies, and there isn’t even ONE minority in the movie.
When you watch TV and the only commercials with black people are McDonalds commercials.
When your teachers and peers tell you, that don’t worry about trying too hard to get into college——you are lucky you made it this far.
When all of your white friends and rarely white boyfriends say, “I love how white you are, you aren’t ugly and ghetto like all other black people.”
When you are listening to music and someone says, “You aren’t supposed to listen to white music, stop acting white. Go listen to rap or something.”
When people say the N-word in front of you and just smile in your face afterwards.
When the first black president gets elected, everyone calls him a Nazi Communist baby killing terrorist.
When you go to a party and the guys assume you are a slut because black women are supposed to be erotic and exotic in bed and they’ve “Never been with a black girl before.”
When everyone assumes you are a criminal because you are a black male.
When everyone is proud because you are a black female who isn’t pregnant.
When black girls are stereotyped as ugly because white women are considered the true beauties of the world.
When a member of the KKK in your hometown drives around with four huge bulldogs in the back of his red convertible with dragons license plates embroidered on the front.
When you turn on the TV and something racist and degrading is always being said about black or minorities in general.
When white people complain about how racist black people are, when racism against whites hasn’t been around for ever and hasn’t been rooted into our society to the point where you start to doubt it will ever go away.
When Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck can get on TV and say extremely racist things and people think this is okay and normal.
When racism exists everywhere around you and no one does anything about it.
When…..
Please, by all means, start blogs on Tumblr about how racist minorities are.
Your’e privileged, and if you do, it will just prove the stereotype.
But in this case, privilege isn’t a stereotype, its a fact.
